Architecture Decision Record: Rust programming language
Decision Number: AR-001
Decision Title: How We Adopt Rust programming language
Date: December 1, 2021
Status: Accepted
Problem Statement
As we dey continue to develop software applications, we don observe say e dey increasingly challenging to mitigate potential security vulnerabilities and prevent runtime errors. With di existing programming languages, like C and C++, we dey continue to experience issues like buffer overflows, memory leaks, and undefined behavior wey dey lead to crashes for applications. We require programming language wey provide memory safety guarantees and efficient enough to support performance-critical applications.
Considerations
Several programming languages dem design to address di existing problems. Among dem, Rust programming language don gain significant attention from developers community because of im unique design features. Considerations include;
Memory safety and security
Performance and efficiency
Community support and adoption
Learning curve
Tools and ecosystem
Compatibility with existing software systems.
Constraints
To adopt new programming language require retraining developers, wey take time and resources. E fit be challenge to integrate di language into di existing development workflow. We must ensure compatibility with di existing systems and avoid breaking changes so we go maintain continuity.
Implementation
Our development team go undergo training to learn and familiarize themselves with Rust programming language.
We go create new project with Rust on trial basis to evaluate im compatibility and suitability for our development purposes.
We go gradually migrate existing systems wey dem write for C and C++ go Rust.
We go collaborate with Rust community to explore di tools and libraries wey dey available wey fit enhance our development workflow.
We go monitor di performance of Rust and compare am to di performance of di existing programming languages regularly.
We go adopt long-term approach wey balance di costs of training, integration, and potential benefits of to use Rust.
Rationale
We don adopt Rust because of im unique features wey dem design to provide memory safety and security guarantees while e still maintain performance and efficiency. Rust robust type system, borrow checker, and memory safety concepts make am highly suitable to develop performance-critical and safety-critical applications. Plus, Rust get significant community of developers, wey enable us to access wide range of tools, libraries, and ecosystem wey support our development workflow. Even though Rust come with learning curve, we believe say di benefits of to adopt Rust pass di costs and e provide excellent opportunity for continued growth and innovation.
Consequences
Di adoption of Rust go require significant investment of time and resources to train developers and integrate di language into di existing development workflow.
To adopt Rust fit cause some degree of compatibility issues with existing systems, wey require refactoring, and modifications.
Rust adoption fit increase di number of developers wey fit contribute to our project by to attract Rust developers wey want work on exciting projects.
Di adoption fit lead to improved performance, efficiency, and safety compared to di existing languages.
Finally, to adopt Rust come with potential benefit to reduce security vulnerabilities for our applications.
