Architectur Decisioun Record: API uisin JSON v. gRPC
Status
Accepted
Context
We are designin an API for a new service that will be uised bi multiple clients. We hae been considerin twa options for implementin the API: uisin JSON ower HTTP or uisin gRPC.
JSON ower HTTP is a widely-uised approach for biggin APIs, an it is supportit bi mony programmin leids an frameworks. This approach is simple, lichtwecht, an easy tae unnerstaun, makin it a guid chyce for mony projects. But, it can be less efficient than ither options, especially whan it comes tae haunlin muckle amoonts o data.
gRPC, on the ither haun, is a newer technology that offers a mair efficient wey o biggin APIs. It uises binary serialisation tae transfer data, which can be faster an mair compact than uisin JSON. gRPC an aw supports bidirectional streamin, makin it a guid chyce for real-time applications.
Decision
Efter considerin the pros an cons o baith options, we hae decidit tae uise gRPC for oor API. Tho JSON ower HTTP is a simpler option, we believe that gRPC will provide a mair efficient an scalable solution for oor service. We an aw anticipate that oor API will haunle a muckle amoont o data, an gRPC's binary serialisation will be mair efficient for this uise case.
In addition, we believe that gRPC's support for bidirectional streamin will be beneficial for real-time applications that we micht develop in the future.
Consequences
Bi chuisin gRPC, we will need tae uise a different set o tuils an leebraries tae big oor API compared tae uisin JSON ower HTTP. This micht require additional time an effort tae lairn an implement thir technologies. Additionally, clients wha want tae uise oor API will need tae uise gRPC-compatible leebraries, which micht no be as widely supportit as JSON ower HTTP leebraries.
But, we believe that the benefits o uisin gRPC outweigh thir potential drawbacks, an we are confident that this decisioun will result in a mair efficient an scalable API.
